Information:-

The science of thermodynamics deals with energy transfer and its effect on condition of system. Through the energy exist in various forms, however in engineering application we are more concerned with conversion of heat energy into work and vice-versa. However, in this text, we primarily concerned with transfer of heat energy.

The heat is defined as form of energy which can be transferred from one system to another system across their boundaries due to temperature deference existing between the two systems. The amount of transfer of heat energy across the system can be determined by the application of 1st law of thermodynamics.

During transfer of heat energy it is observed that heat energy transfer from higher temperature medium to lower temperature medium. And transfer of heat stops at condition when the temperature of both ends becomes equal, Thus drive force of transfer of heat energy is temperature difference.

All modes of heat transfer require the existence of temperature difference and heat is always transferred in the direction of decreasing temperature.

  • Conduction

     Conduction of heat is defined as transfer of heat energy from one part of substance to another part of the same substance without appreciable motion of molecules. (modes of heat transfer)

The conduction can be take place in solid, liquid and gases.

  • Convection

     Convection is due to capacity of moving matter to carry heat energy. The transfer of energy by convection takes place between a solid surface and adjacent liquid or gas layer that is in motion.

  • Radiation

The process of transfer of heat energy by radiation is due to the electro-magnetic radiation emitted in a wave length band between 0.1 u to   100 u solely as result of temperature of surface. Therefore the transfer of heat energy does not require any medium to travel.

The best example of modes of heat transfer in radiation is sunlight.
